After discussing with a friend the specifics of my songwriting, and I talked about how I could never take myself seriously when writing lyrics. My default mode of writing is non-sensical and absurd. Occasionally, I might try to let something personal slip into a song one out of every twenty songs. So, most of the time, I'm just trying to funny lyrics to make funny songs. This is the reason I write funny songs instead of serious songs.
Not to be emo or anything, but I feel like I've put up with a lot of bull shit. And here I go being emo.
Blah, Blah, Blah, I never had a real dad.
Blah, Blah, Blah, I wish I could communicate with my mom.
Blah, Blah, Blah, I had trouble with girls when I was younger.
Blah, Blah, Blah, I get made fun of.
Blah, Blah, Blah, I've had self-image issues.
Real life sucks major dick every now and again. You'll find that you don't live in a big house with sports car and a beautiful wife and the Talking Heads were just lying to you. So instead of just crying and whining about it, I just forget about it and try to tell a joke. I figure that the joke will be more entertaining the any number of songs I could write about how I turn into a misogynist around certain girls or how I am constantly coping with the fact my dad gave a shit about me.
Then again, that is the cool thing about life. No matter what happened that fucked you up (and we're all pretty fucked up), what fucks you up is what drives you. Dealing with all the stuff that I should talk about with a therapist on my own has made me write songs this way. I'm fueled by my own hell, and that's pretty fantastic in the end.
So for tl;dr, I write funny songs because I don't want to sound emo.
By the way, on an unrelated note, I'm disappointed (but not surprised) that My President is a Muslim was not as well received as Boner Dance, but I'm guessing I'm bumping heads with a few Obama supporters. I can understand if some people can't make it past the first chorus, but I thought it was pretty funny (albeit annoying with how many times I sing "My President is a Muslim" using a kid's voice).
